Rock observation

For better comfort of the tourists, an adjusted rock observation point was opened in 1889, it is called Fanterova skála (Fanter’s Rock). Few days after, a hut appeared near the rock where local businesspeople sold bottled beer to tired trippers after the steep ascent.

The start of construction lookout tower

There were more and more tourists and their demands were rising and so the albrechtická section of the German Alpine Club for the Ještědsko area and the Jizera Mountains decided to make the peak accessible to the general public and build here a lookout tower. After initial problems with parcels, an experienced builder of lookout towers and architect Robert Hemmrich was assigned to construct it.

The construction started in 1908, in the same year celebrations of 60 years of reign of Franz Joseph I. of Austria in Austro-Hungarian Empire took place, therefore, the Club decided to name it the Anniversary Lookout Tower of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

The construction of tourist cottage

The free-standing lookout tower Špičák was opened on 4th July 1909. The cottage was opened in 1910, one year after the opening of the tower.

Water pipes were installed there in 1923, the buildings that joined the lookout tower were considerably extended in the 1929-30. Apart from two spacious rooms in the pub, veranda and lounge the visitor can find also eight rooms for guests and a room to store sports equipment in it. The building was electrified. The construction work from those years has been also the last that Špičák went through and it looks the same since then.

The tower alone is 18 m high with a viewing platform at a height of 14 m. You have to get through 69 steps to the viewing platform and the reward is the beautiful panoramic view of the whole Jizera Mountains, to the Giant Mountains and Černá studnice and to the Ještěd ridge.
