Description:

The ruptured Desná Dam was built on the Bílá Desná River in the Jizera Mountains. Construction, at a height of 806 m above sea level above the Desná municipality in the Jizera Mountains, in the cadastral district of the Albrechtice v Jizerských horách municipality, was finished in 1915. The dam ruptured on 18th September 1916, after roughly a year of existence, and swept away part of the Desná municipality. It is the greatest disaster due to dam rupture in the Czech Republic.

It had catastrophic consequences. A flood wave caused not only extensive material damage but also claimed 65 lives.

The remains of the ruptured dam are unique and their inadequate building construction served after the catastrophe to provide safer calculations for other dams built after 1916.

It was declared a cultural monument in 1996. The outlet tower, remains of the dam and the underground outlet tunnel which led the water to the neighbouring Souš reservoir are still preserved today.
